What Washington is doing about PFAS

Washington state has an active PFAS program through the Department of Ecology and the State Department of Health. Ecology published a Chemical Action Plan for PFAS in 2020 that set state action levels for drinking water, though these were advisory rather than enforceable MCLs. The state health department later issued State Action Levels of 10 parts per trillion for PFOA, 15 parts per trillion for PFOS, 65 parts per trillion for PFHxS, 9 parts per trillion for PFNA, and 345 parts per trillion for PFBS.

The Washington legislature was the first in the country to ban PFAS in food packaging, through a 2018 law that took effect once safer alternatives were identified. Washington has also banned PFAS in firefighting foam and in cosmetics. State records show contamination has been identified near Joint Base Lewis-McChord and the former Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, as well as the Airway Heights area near Fairchild Air Force Base outside Spokane.

Public water systems in Washington are subject to the federal compliance timeline requiring initial monitoring by 2027 and treatment installation by 2029, in addition to the state action level framework.

Based on Washington State Department of Ecology and Washington State Department of Health publications.
