What Iowa is doing about PFAS

As of April 2026, Iowa has not adopted state-level PFAS drinking water standards beyond the federal EPA limits finalized in April 2024. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has conducted a voluntary PFAS sampling initiative at public water supplies, with results posted publicly. Detections at municipal supplies in central Iowa prompted expanded sampling during 2023 and 2024.

Public water systems in Iowa are subject to the federal compliance timeline requiring initial monitoring by 2027 and treatment installation by 2029.

Based on Iowa Department of Natural Resources publications.
