What Illinois is doing about PFAS

Illinois has adopted health advisory guidance levels for six PFAS compounds through the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, including a PFOA guidance level of 2 parts per trillion and a PFOS guidance level of 14 parts per trillion, both advisory rather than enforceable. The state has conducted a statewide PFAS sampling investigation of community water supplies under an EPA grant.

The Illinois legislature passed the PFAS Reduction Act in 2021, prohibiting the sale and use of Class B firefighting foam containing intentionally added PFAS. State records show Illinois has joined multistate litigation against 3M and DuPont, and several utilities near former industrial and military sites have reported exceedances.

Public water systems in Illinois are subject to the federal compliance timeline requiring initial monitoring by 2027 and treatment installation by 2029.

Based on Illinois Environmental Protection Agency publications and Illinois legislative records.
