What Alaska is doing about PFAS

As of April 2026, Alaska has not adopted state-level PFAS drinking water standards beyond the federal EPA limits finalized in April 2024. The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation maintains action levels for site investigations at legacy firefighting foam release locations, including civilian airports and former military installations such as the Fairbanks area, but these are cleanup triggers rather than enforceable drinking water limits.

State legislators have introduced several PFAS bills in recent sessions covering foam takeback and testing at state airports. Public water systems are subject to the federal compliance timeline requiring initial monitoring by 2027 and treatment installation by 2029.

Based on Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation PFAS action level guidance.
