What Alabama is doing about PFAS

As of April 2026, Alabama has not adopted state-level PFAS drinking water standards beyond the federal EPA limits finalized in April 2024. The Alabama Department of Environmental Management has participated in federal UCMR 5 sampling coordination but has not issued enforceable state MCLs of its own.

State records show ongoing litigation connected to 3M and other chemical manufacturers operating in the Decatur area, where historic PFAS releases into the Tennessee River have driven multiple settlements with downstream utilities. Water systems in Alabama remain subject to the federal compliance timeline requiring initial monitoring by 2027 and treatment installation by 2029.

Based on Alabama Department of Environmental Management publications and public litigation records.
